Fences and decks in Vancouver.
A lot of our work is in the city itself. Kitsilano, Dunbar, Arbutus Ridge, Champlain Heights, Mount Pleasant and the Drive, for homeowners, strata councils and property managers.

Vancouver lots are tight. Lanes at the back, neighbours close on both sides, and a front yard that is on show from the street. So most of what we build here is about privacy, and about making a small yard work harder.
We build in every common material: cedar, pressure treated wood, vinyl, composite, aluminum and chain link. On a city lot the choice usually comes down to how much upkeep you want, and how the fence or deck looks from the lane and the sidewalk.
Below are six jobs we did in Vancouver, with the full story on each one.

Local rules worth knowing in Vancouver
From the city's own bylaw pages. Rules change and some lots have their own conditions, so we check the current rules for your address before we quote.
- Fence heightUp to 1.9 m (about 6 ft 2 in) in side and rear yards, and 1.2 m (about 4 ft) in the front yard. If the fence sits on or near a retaining wall, the allowed height drops by half the height of the wall. Zoning By-law, s.10.10
- Fence permitA fence within those limits does not need a development permit. A taller front-yard fence, gate or arbor can be applied for, and the city decides case by case. City bulletin
- DecksA patio more than 600 mm (2 ft) above the ground counts as a deck and needs a guard around it. We check permit needs for your deck before we quote. City bulletin
